Switzerland applies modernised social security coordination regulations

As from 1 April 2012, Switzerland joins the 27 EU member states in applying modernised regulations on social security coordination.

Regulations (EC) Nos 883/2004 and 987/2009, the legislative package known as modernised social security coordination, have been applied within the EU since 1 May 2010.

The entry into force of these new regulations triggered an update of the Swiss agreement with the EU and its Member States on the free movement of persons, namely of its annex on social security coordination. The process has lead to the adoption of Decision No 1/2012 by the EU-Swiss Joint Committee on 31 March marking the extension of modernised coordination rules to Switzerland.

Until then, Regulations (EEC) Nos 1408/71 and 574/72 were still applied in the relations with the Swiss confederation.

Regulations (EEC) Nos 1408/71 and 574/72 still apply in relations with three EEA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
